Ryan Schmaltz | General Manager | Director of Winemaking Ryan joined Bella as a harvest intern in 2012, bringing with him a fervent passion for Zinfandel and Rhône varietals. Holding a PhD in organic chemistry, he possessed a profound understanding of fermentation, which quickly elevated him beyond the typical intern role. He soon advanced to the position of Enologist, where he took charge of Bella’s laboratory. In his roles as Enologist and later Assistant Winemaker, Ryan spearheaded numerous experiments, adjusting fermentation temperatures and varying grape skin contact time, continually refining Bella’s winemaking techniques with each harvest. His journey continued at Trattore, where he served as Winemaker, further exploring Rhône varietals and spending extensive time in the vineyard. This experience deepened his understanding of the growing cycle and its impact on producing exceptional wines. Now, as General Manager and Director of Winemaking, Ryan oversees all aspects of winery operations, from vineyard management to production, and is committed to enhancing Bella’s already outstanding wines. Reflecting on his connection to Bella, he shares, "Whether you come to Bella for one visit or spend most of your days here, it pulls you in; it beckons you back again and again. There is no place I’d rather be than right here, amidst our amazing vines and among friends."
