2007 Russian River Valley zinfandel
variety: 92% primitivo, 8% petite sirah
appellation: Russian River Valley
maturation: 14 months French and American oak
alcohol: 14.0%
Vinification notes: Fruit was hand-picked and immediately crushed and destemmed. Petite sirah that was utilized in the blend was co-fermented, resulting in a well-integrated blend. Aging occurred in a combination of French and American oak for 14 months.
Sensory Notes: Our Russian River zin is a stellar example of the Italian primitivo clone. This close variation of zinfandel exhibits earthier, darker flavors with an intense bouquet of blackcurrant and cedar. It is spicier and evokes a slightly old-world sensibility on the palate. A delightful finish of soft but solid tannins and tart berry linger after every luscious sip.
Vineyard Notes: Big River Ranch is a unique property that straddles the divide between the Alexander Valley and the Russian River appellations. These vines are located on the southern edge of the property and showcase the cooler climate style, typical of Russian River Valley zin. Lower temperatures increase “hang time” and result in a more spice-driven wine.
Vintage Synopsis: In 2007 we experienced a steady summer of warm days and cool, foggy nights, ideal growing conditions for top-notch winegrapes. 2007 wines have excellent concentration with full but soft tannins. The vintage balances power and finesse and is perhaps the best year in Sonoma County in the last decade.
Cellar Recommendations: Drink from 2010 through 2015.
