2005 Big River Ranch zinfandel
Vinification notes:
Fruit was destemmed and crushed before a cold soak for the first days of the 25-day fermentation. Submerged cap tanks were utilized and pumpovers were performed twice a day. In this fermentation, approximately 50% of the active yeast was native. Sensory Notes: The 2005 Big River Ranch zinfandel exemplifies zin at its best. From its wonderfully dark hue to the intoxicating bouquet of ripe, red fruit, this wine rewards the palate with a combination of dark berry and spice, followed by a surprisingly elegant, silky finish. Expect this sumptuous zinfandel to improve in the cellar for at least 8-10 years. Vineyard Notes: Located on a gently sloping hillside beside the Russian River, the Big River ranch is a unique property. The backbone of this zinfandel is 14 acres of 110 year-old vines. Big River Ranch boasts deep red soil and hot summer days, though the coastal cooling effect and early morning fog of the nearby Russian River Valley allow for longer ripening times for the fruit coming off these ancient vines. Vintage Synopsis: The 2005 harvest began with an early bud break in February. The year continued with limited rain in the early spring and no late season heat spikes. A cooler overall growing season allowed the grapes to hang until their optimal ripeness. This resulted in more intense flavors as well as a leisurely crush that extended fully into November.
