2009 Big River Ranch zinfandel
variety: zinfandel
appellation: Alexander Valley
maturation: 12 months in French and American oak, 15% new
alcohol: 14.7%

vinification notes: Fruit from the Big River Ranch was handpicked at optimal ripeness before being destemmed and crushed. A 12-day fermentation took place in a submerged-cap tank for full extraction of the grape skins before being pressed and barreled down in 15% new French and American oak barrels for 12 months.

sensory notes: This luscious, expansive zinfandel exhibits an enticingly aromatic bouquet of black cherry, cloves and cedar. The mouthfeel is substantial and round, with lingering flavors of blackcurrant and sweet molasses.

vineyard notes: Located on a hillside above the Russian River, the Big River Ranch has a unique location and climate. The backbone of this zinfandel is 14 acres of 110-year-old vines. These vines produce small yields, as well as shockingly dark and ripe fruit. Big River Ranch boasts the deep red soil and hot summer days that give the Alexander Valley its stellar reputation for big, complex wines. It also benefits from the coastal cooling effect and early-morning fog of the nearby Russian River Valley. The result is longer “hang times” for the coveted fruit coming off these ancient vines.
